On Thursday night, I and numerous pro-democracy and pro-sustainability candidates were elected to American University’s Undergraduate Senate! Our resounding victory was a mandate from AU’s student body that sustainable and democratic reforms could not wait any longer! Furthermore, AU’s student body voted 90% in favor of a referendum to place student voting members on the university’s board of trustees.
This monumental victory comes at a very pivotal time for American University. Over the past few months, our school has dropped #33 places in the U.S. News rankings, we have experienced a $30 million dollar projected budget shortfall, and our Student Government has fallen from the #1 most impactful in the nation down to #14!
“Change Can’t Wait” is AU’s fundraising campaign name and this week, AU’s students have demonstrated their desire for change at the polls! Myself and the other pro-democracy/sustainability Senators in AUSG are committed to acting upon that mandate and bringing forth a new era of student representation to American University!
